SEO Dunedin for trades, in the one southern market with real competition.
Dunedin is the exception in the lower South Island: it has actual local agencies holding the search results, not just national template pages. That makes it a harder win and a more valuable one, because whoever gets there is not going to be dislodged by an out-of-town page with the city name swapped in.

Dunedin is harder than the rest of the South, and we would rather say so now.
We checked the Dunedin results in September 2026. Unlike Palmerston North, Invercargill or Gisborne, several of the businesses on page one are genuinely Otago based and have put real work into their pages. The difficulty scores back that up: Dunedin rates well above the other provincial cities we cover and closer to the main centres.
That changes the plan rather than cancelling it. Competing for the broad city-wide terms here is a long, expensive fight. Competing for a specific job in a specific suburb is not, because the local agencies are mostly ranking general service pages rather than the service-plus-suburb pages the customers are actually typing. That is where a Dunedin trade business wins, and it is also where the work is.
Three places Dunedin customers find you.
Most SEO only chases the blue links. Local customers pick from the map pack, the organic results and, increasingly, AI answers. We work on all three.
The map pack
The three map results under the search bar take the biggest share of local clicks. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the person searching decide whether you appear for a search in Dunedin at all.
The organic results
The classic blue links. Pages built around the exact jobs you do and the areas you cover across Otago, on a site fast enough that Google trusts it. This is the part that compounds.
AI answers
More people now ask Google's AI overview or ChatGPT who to call in Dunedin. We structure your site so those answers can read it, quote it and recommend you by name. Almost nobody in these markets has caught up yet.

Dunedin is not one market.
One page listing every suburb ranks for none of them. Separate pages for the work you do in the areas you actually travel to is what moves, and it is the step almost every local site skips.
Central Dunedin and the campus
The Octagon, the warehouse precinct and North Dunedin. Old buildings, student housing and landlords, which means volume work: plumbing, electrical, heating, roofing and compliance. Also the most contested part of the market, so expect the suburb pages to land before the central ones do.
South Dunedin and the coast
South Dunedin, St Kilda, St Clair and Caversham. Older housing, damp problems, and a lot of the retrofit and maintenance work that comes with both. These suburbs are searched by name constantly and are far softer than the central terms.
Mosgiel and the Taieri
Twenty minutes out and effectively its own town, with its own searches and its own expectations about who turns up. Growing residential, newer builds, and very little competing content. If you service the Taieri, this is usually the fastest page on the site to rank.
The hill suburbs and Port Chalmers
Roslyn, Maori Hill, Mornington and Halfway Bush. Dunedin's geography punishes anyone planning by radius alone, because the hills make a two kilometre trip feel like ten and customers pick accordingly. Add Port Chalmers and the peninsula and you have a set of small, winnable markets most Dunedin businesses ignore.
The site is where a Dunedin ranking turns into work.
Web design searches in Dunedin sit at a similar difficulty to the SEO ones, so neither is a free win. What tips it is that most Dunedin trade sites are slow, and speed is both a ranking factor and a conversion factor. Fixing that is usually the cheapest lift available.
The faster door into a market this competitive.
Dunedin's organic results are the hardest in the lower South Island, but the ads auction is nothing like as contested. That gap is the argument for ads first: enquiries in days while the search work builds underneath over months, and real data on which searches turn into booked jobs.
- Campaigns targeted to Dunedin and the Otago towns you actually serve
- Negative keywords that stop your budget going on students, job hunters and DIYers
- Conversion tracking wired up properly, so you know which clicks became calls
- Monthly reporting on cost per enquiry, not impressions
Enquiries from homeowners and builders at about $6 each for nearly five years, from one tightly managed campaign run month after month. A Hawke's Bay business, not a Dunedin one, and every number is theirs to verify in their own account.

No. We are a New Zealand team working with businesses nationwide, based in Hawke's Bay and Auckland. Unlike most of the cities we cover, several of the agencies competing for these searches genuinely are local to Otago, and it would be daft to pretend we are one of them. Search work does not need us to be in your city, but you should know which is which.
Harder than any other provincial market we cover. When we researched it in September 2026, the difficulty scores for the Dunedin SEO terms sat well above Palmerston North, Rotorua, Invercargill and Gisborne, and page one included genuine Otago agencies rather than templated national pages. It is winnable, but on specific jobs and suburbs, not on the broad city terms, and it takes longer here.
Because the local agencies are mostly ranking general service pages, and the customers are typing service plus suburb. Nobody is holding "gas fitter Mosgiel" the way they hold "SEO Dunedin". Those pages are cheap to build, quick to move and they are attached to the jobs you actually want.
In Dunedin, usually yes. The organic results are the most contested in the lower South Island while the ads auction is comparatively quiet, so ads produce enquiries in days and tell you which searches convert. The sensible order for most businesses here is ads first for cash flow, SEO underneath for the year after.
Yes. Mosgiel and the Taieri, Port Chalmers, the peninsula and up the coast to Waikouaiti are all part of the same market and considerably softer than the city terms. If your team travels further, to Central Otago or the lakes, tell us and we will look at whether those pages are worth building.
SEO is $497 +GST a month, the same as one ad campaign, and it stands on its own or alongside your website and ads. Ad spend, if you run ads, is separate and goes straight to Google. The free leads audit works out what you actually need first.
No, and in this market especially, be careful with anyone who does. Google does not sell rankings. What we can show you is what we are doing, what is moving and what it is costing per enquiry, every month, with no lock-in contract.
Trades and home services are our specialty, but the same system works for any Dunedin local service business that lives on local search. If we do not think we are the right fit, we will tell you on the call.
