SEO Nelson, where the search results are barely defended.
Nelson has a small SEO market and a surprisingly large one for websites, and almost nothing genuinely local competing for either. If you want a clear illustration of how thin these results are, a marine business currently outranks most agencies for the main search term with a blog post.

A boat company ranks for this. That tells you everything.
We pulled the Nelson results in September 2026. Page one is national agency pages and a couple of local marketing shops, and then, at number seven, a Nelson marine business with an article called "Everything You Need to Know About SEO". Google was not confused. It simply had nothing more relevant to show, which is what an undefended market looks like.
The shape of the opportunity here is unusual. The SEO searches are small but effectively uncontested. The web design searches are several times larger and meaningfully harder. So the sensible order is the reverse of most cities: take the easy search rankings first, then decide whether the website terms are worth the longer fight.
Three places Nelson customers find you.
Most SEO only chases the blue links. Local customers pick from the map pack, the organic results and, increasingly, AI answers. We work on all three.
The map pack
The three map results under the search bar take the biggest share of local clicks. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the person searching decide whether you appear for a search in Nelson at all.
The organic results
The classic blue links. Pages built around the exact jobs you do and the areas you cover across Nelson and Tasman, on a site fast enough that Google trusts it. This is the part that compounds.
AI answers
More people now ask Google's AI overview or ChatGPT who to call in Nelson. We structure your site so those answers can read it, quote it and recommend you by name. Almost nobody in these markets has caught up yet.

Nelson is not one market.
One page listing every suburb ranks for none of them. Separate pages for the work you do in the areas you actually travel to is what moves, and it is the step almost every local site skips.
Nelson city
The CBD, Trafalgar Street, The Wood and Britannia Heights. Older housing, heritage buildings and a compact commercial centre, which brings steady maintenance, heating and compliance work. The most searched part of the region and still barely contested.
Tahunanui and Stoke
Tahunanui, Stoke and Annesbrook. The bulk of Nelson's residential and light industrial work sits along here, and both names get typed into Google constantly by people expecting a local business to appear. Mostly, none does.
Richmond and Tasman
Richmond has grown into its own centre with its own searches, and it is routinely treated as an afterthought by Nelson businesses. Add Brightwater, Wakefield and Mapua. Thin competition, real jobs, and short drives.
Motueka and Golden Bay
Motueka, Riwaka and, over the hill, Tākaka and Golden Bay. Long drives and small volumes, but almost nothing competing for any of the town names. Worth pages only for the runs you actually make.
The website terms are the bigger prize and the harder fight.
Web design searches in Nelson carry several times the volume of the SEO ones, but they are also the most contested terms in the region by a distance. Worth going after deliberately, after the easy search rankings are banked, rather than as the opening move.
Need the phone ringing before SEO lands?
SEO takes months even in a market this quiet. Google Ads takes days, and Nelson click prices are among the cheapest in the country for most trades, so a modest budget buys a real test of which searches turn into booked jobs.
- Campaigns targeted to Nelson, Richmond or Motueka separately, not one blanket radius
- Negative keywords that stop your budget going on holidaymakers, job hunters and DIYers
- Conversion tracking wired up properly, so you know which clicks became calls
- Monthly reporting on cost per enquiry, not impressions
Enquiries from homeowners and builders at about $6 each for nearly five years, from one tightly managed campaign run month after month. A Hawke's Bay business, not a Nelson one, and every number is theirs to verify in their own account.

No. We are a New Zealand team working with businesses nationwide, based in Hawke's Bay and Auckland. Very little of what ranks for Nelson is local either, which is rather the argument for this page. Search work does not need us to be in your city, but you should know who you are dealing with.
Barely competitive. When we researched it in September 2026, page one was national agency pages plus a couple of local marketing shops, and a Nelson marine company ranking seventh with a general article about SEO. Google shows that kind of result when there is nothing better available, which is good news for anyone willing to build something better.
The SEO searches are modest and the website searches are considerably bigger, so it depends which you are chasing. For a trade business where a won job is worth four figures, the local service and suburb searches are more than enough to justify the work. We will tell you on the call if your particular services turn out to be too thin here.
The SEO ones first, because they are effectively undefended and will land quickly. The web design terms carry several times the volume but they are the hardest in the region, so treat those as the second phase once the easy rankings are banked and producing enquiries.
Yes, if you genuinely drive them. Richmond in particular is its own centre now with its own searches, and Nelson businesses routinely ignore it. Motueka and Golden Bay are worth pages only if the trip makes sense for the jobs you get out of them.
SEO is $497 +GST a month, the same as one ad campaign, and it stands on its own or alongside your website and ads. Ad spend, if you run ads, is separate and goes straight to Google. The free leads audit works out what you need first.
No, and nobody genuinely can, because Google does not sell rankings. In a market this quiet the top of page one is realistically reachable, which is a reason to be optimistic rather than a reason to promise you a position.
Trades and home services are our specialty, but the same system works for any Nelson local service business that lives on local search. If we do not think we are the right fit, we will tell you on the call.
