New Plymouth & Taranaki

SEO New Plymouth, built around what Taranaki searches.

New Plymouth is a straightforward search market with one trap in it. The SEO terms are soft and worth chasing. The web design terms are among the hardest in provincial New Zealand and are not worth a fight. This page is built around the first and upfront about the second.

The straight read

Soft on search, unusually hard on web design.

We researched New Plymouth in September 2026 and the two halves of the market came back nothing alike. The SEO terms are easy: page one is a mix of national agency city pages and a handful of Taranaki operators, with difficulty scores near the floor. The web design terms are the opposite, rating harder than Wellington, Hamilton or Tauranga for the same kind of search.

So the plan here is narrower than usual and better for it. Go after the search rankings, which are cheap and will hold, and leave the web design terms alone unless you have a specific reason and a long horizon. Any agency quoting you a plan to win both is either guessing or has not looked.

SEO New Plymouth

Three places New Plymouth customers find you.

Most SEO only chases the blue links. Local customers pick from the map pack, the organic results and, increasingly, AI answers. We work on all three.

The map pack

The three map results under the search bar take the biggest share of local clicks. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the person searching decide whether you appear for a search in New Plymouth at all.

The organic results

The classic blue links. Pages built around the exact jobs you do and the areas you cover across Taranaki, on a site fast enough that Google trusts it. This is the part that compounds.

AI answers

More people now ask Google's AI overview or ChatGPT who to call in New Plymouth. We structure your site so those answers can read it, quote it and recommend you by name. Almost nobody in these markets has caught up yet.

Where we work

New Plymouth is not one market.

One page listing every suburb ranks for none of them. Separate pages for the work you do in the areas you actually travel to is what moves, and it is the step almost every local site skips.

New Plymouth central and the coast

The CBD, the waterfront and Strandon. Commercial premises, older housing and the salt-air maintenance load that comes with a coastal city. Reliable roofing, painting and exterior work, and the most searched part of the region.

Bell Block, Waiwhakaiho and the east

Bell Block, Waiwhakaiho and Glen Avon. Where most of the growth and the light industrial work sits, plus newer subdivisions with first-fit and landscaping work. Searched by name and matched by almost nothing.

Vogeltown, Frankleigh Park and the south

The older southern suburbs on the way to the mountain. Established housing, steady renovation and heating work, and a customer base that searches with the suburb attached.

Waitara, Inglewood, Stratford and Hāwera

The Taranaki towns strung around the mountain. Energy and dairy money, real jobs, long drives and no competition at all for the town names. Worth pages for the ones you genuinely service.

Need the phone ringing before SEO lands?

SEO takes months. Google Ads takes days. Taranaki click prices are among the cheaper ones in the country for most trades, so a modest budget buys a real test of which searches turn into booked jobs before you commit to a year of search work.

  • Campaigns targeted to New Plymouth or the Taranaki towns separately, not one blanket radius
  • Negative keywords that stop your budget going on job hunters, students and DIYers
  • Conversion tracking wired up properly, so you know which clicks became calls
  • Monthly reporting on cost per enquiry, not impressions

Continuous Spouting

Enquiries from homeowners and builders at about $6 each for nearly five years, from one tightly managed campaign run month after month. A Hawke's Bay business, not a New Plymouth one, and every number is theirs to verify in their own account.

FAQ

Straight answers.

Are you based in New Plymouth?

No. We are a New Zealand team working with businesses nationwide, based in Hawke's Bay and Auckland. Several of the agencies competing for these searches are national names with a New Plymouth page rather than a New Plymouth office, so it is worth knowing which is which.

How competitive is SEO in New Plymouth?

The search terms are soft. When we researched them in September 2026 the difficulty scores sat near the floor and page one was a mix of national city pages and a handful of Taranaki operators. Well-built pages should move here without a long fight.

Why don't you push web design for New Plymouth?

Because the numbers say not to. The web design terms here rate harder than Wellington, Hamilton or Tauranga do for the same searches, which is unusual for a city this size and means a long, expensive fight for modest volume. We would rather put your money into the search terms that will actually move. If you need a site built we will build you one, we just will not sell you a plan to rank it for that term.

Do you cover Hāwera, Stratford and the Taranaki towns?

Yes, if you genuinely drive them. Each has its own searches and effectively no competing content, and the energy and dairy money around them means the jobs can be worth the trip. We will not build pages for towns you cannot service.

How long does SEO take to work in New Plymouth?

Local SEO usually shows movement in 2 to 3 months and meaningful results in 6 to 12. Given how soft the Taranaki search terms currently are, expect the faster end for the suburb pages. Nobody can promise you a timeline and we will not.

What does it cost?

SEO is $497 +GST a month, the same as one ad campaign, and it stands on its own or alongside your website and ads. Ad spend, if you run ads, is separate and goes straight to Google. The free leads audit works out what you need first.

Can you guarantee a number one ranking?

No, and nobody genuinely can, because Google does not sell rankings. What we can show you is what we are doing, what is moving and what it is costing per enquiry, every month, with no lock-in contract.

Do you only work with tradies?

Trades and home services are our specialty, but the same system works for any New Plymouth local service business that lives on local search. If we do not think we are the right fit, we will tell you on the call.
