SEO Wanaka: small market, expensive customers.
Wanaka has fewer searches than any city on this site and the dearest clicks of the lot. That combination tells you exactly what kind of market it is: not many people looking, but the ones who are have serious jobs and serious budgets. Judge it on job value, never on volume.

The dearest clicks of any town we build pages for.
When we pulled the Keyword Planner numbers in September 2026, top-of-page bids for Wanaka search terms came back many times higher than Palmerston North, Rotorua, Invercargill or Gisborne, and comfortably above the main centres. Search volume, meanwhile, is tiny. Advertisers do not pay those prices for nothing: it is a market of new builds, second homes, high-spec renovations and owners who are not price shopping.
The organic results, by contrast, are a mix of national agency pages and small local web shops, and none of it is built around the jobs a Wanaka trade business actually wants. In a market where a single job can be worth more than a year of marketing, being the obvious answer to a handful of searches is worth considerably more than it sounds.
Three places Wanaka customers find you.
Most SEO only chases the blue links. Local customers pick from the map pack, the organic results and, increasingly, AI answers. We work on all three.
The map pack
The three map results under the search bar take the biggest share of local clicks. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the person searching decide whether you appear for a search in Wanaka at all.
The organic results
The classic blue links. Pages built around the exact jobs you do and the areas you cover across Central Otago and the Lakes, on a site fast enough that Google trusts it. This is the part that compounds.
AI answers
More people now ask Google's AI overview or ChatGPT who to call in Wanaka. We structure your site so those answers can read it, quote it and recommend you by name. Almost nobody in these markets has caught up yet.

Wanaka is not one market.
One page listing every suburb ranks for none of them. Separate pages for the work you do in the areas you actually travel to is what moves, and it is the step almost every local site skips.
Wanaka township and Albert Town
The town centre, Albert Town and the newer subdivisions spreading north. Constant building and renovation, a lot of it high-spec, and a customer base that is often managing the job remotely from Auckland or overseas. Being findable and answering fast matters more here than anywhere else on this site.
Lake Hāwea and Luggate
Growing fast, cheaper land, younger families, and a steady flow of new builds and first renovations. Distinct search behaviour from Wanaka proper and effectively no competing content for either name.
Cardrona and the alpine market
Cardrona, the valley and the ski season economy. Seasonal, accommodation-heavy, and full of the maintenance and compliance work that comes with buildings that sit empty half the year and full the other half.
Queenstown, Cromwell and Central Otago
Over the Crown Range and out through Cromwell and Alexandra. Queenstown is a bigger and much more contested market than Wanaka, so treat it as a separate decision rather than an assumed add-on. Cromwell and Alexandra are closer to Wanaka in difficulty: quiet, winnable and growing.
Expensive clicks are still cheap next to a Wanaka job.
Wanaka has the dearest search clicks of any town on this site, which frightens people off until they do the arithmetic. If a click costs $30 and one in ten enquiries becomes a $40,000 job, the click price is not the number that matters. Cost per won job is.
- Tight targeting on Wanaka, Hāwea and the Upper Clutha rather than a broad Otago radius
- Negative keywords that keep tourists, job hunters and holiday-home browsers out of the budget
- Conversion tracking wired up properly, so you know which clicks became calls
- Reporting on cost per enquiry and cost per won job, which is the only fair test in this market
Enquiries from homeowners and builders at about $6 each for nearly five years, from one tightly managed campaign run month after month. A Hawke's Bay business, not a Wanaka one, and every number is theirs to verify in their own account.

No. We are a New Zealand team working with businesses nationwide, based in Hawke's Bay and Auckland. Search work does not need us to be in your town, but in a market this small and this well connected you should know exactly who you are dealing with, so there it is.
That is the right question and the answer is unusual here. Wanaka has the smallest search volume and the most expensive clicks of any market we cover, which tells you the buyers are valuable rather than numerous. If your average job is worth thousands, being the obvious answer to a small number of searches pays for itself easily. If your jobs are small, it probably will not, and we will say so.
Because the work is worth a lot and the advertisers know it. New builds, second homes and high-spec renovations mean a single won job can dwarf a year of marketing spend, so bidders push the price up. Judge the campaign on cost per won job, not cost per click, or you will talk yourself out of the best market in the country.
The organic results are much softer than the ads. When we looked in September 2026, page one mixed national agency pages with small local web design shops, and nothing was built around specific trade jobs in the Upper Clutha. There is real room there.
Only deliberately. Queenstown is a bigger, busier and much more contested market than Wanaka, and treating it as a free add-on to a Wanaka page is how businesses end up ranking for neither. If you genuinely work over the hill it deserves its own page and its own plan.
SEO is $497 +GST a month, the same as one ad campaign, and it stands on its own or alongside your website and ads. Ad spend, if you run ads, is separate and goes straight to Google, and in Wanaka that is the number to budget carefully, because the clicks are dear.
No, and nobody genuinely can, because Google does not sell rankings. What we can show you is what we are doing, what is moving and what it is costing per enquiry, every month, with no lock-in contract.
