SEO Wellington, and the site and ads that turn rankings into work.
Wellington is a small city with a long catchment. The CBD, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast are four separate search markets strung along one motorway, and one page trying to cover all of them ranks for none. We build the pages, the profile and the ads that put you in front of the people ready to book.

Wellington has real competition. Most of it sells SEO and nothing else.
We checked the Wellington results in September 2026 before writing this page. Page one for the main SEO searches is held by specialist search agencies, several of them national names with a Wellington page rather than a Wellington office. That is a tougher field than the provincial cities and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
The gap is what they sell. They sell rankings. A trade business does not get paid for rankings, it gets paid when the phone rings, which needs the ranking, a site built to take an enquiry and something that answers that enquiry before the customer rings the next name on the list. Running those as three separate suppliers is how most Wellington trade marketing quietly leaks money.
Three places Wellington customers find you.
Most SEO only chases the blue links. Local customers pick from the map pack, the organic results and, increasingly, AI answers. We work on all three.
The map pack
The three map results under the search bar take the biggest share of local clicks. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the person searching decide whether you appear for a search in Wellington at all.
The organic results
The classic blue links. Pages built around the exact jobs you do and the areas you cover across the Wellington region, on a site fast enough that Google trusts it. This is the part that compounds.
AI answers
More people now ask Google's AI overview or ChatGPT who to call in Wellington. We structure your site so those answers can read it, quote it and recommend you by name. Almost nobody in these markets has caught up yet.

Wellington is not one market.
One page listing every suburb ranks for none of them. Separate pages for the work you do in the areas you actually travel to is what moves, and it is the step almost every local site skips.
Wellington city
Te Aro, Thorndon, Kelburn, Newtown, Mount Victoria, Karori and Miramar. Dense, mostly older housing stock, and heavy on the trades that go with it: plumbing, electrical, roofing, weathertightness. Proximity decides the map pack here more than anywhere else in the region, because everything is close enough that Google has plenty of options.
Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt
The Hutt Valley behaves like its own city and searches like it. Petone, Naenae, Wainuiomata, Silverstream and Upper Hutt all get typed by name. If your yard is in the Valley you will rank there far more easily than in town, and a Hutt-specific page is usually the fastest win on the whole site.
Porirua and the northern suburbs
Tawa, Johnsonville, Churton Park, Whitby and Porirua itself. Newer housing, growing subdivisions, and a customer base that will happily call a Wellington business but searches with the suburb name attached. Thin competition compared with the CBD.
Kāpiti Coast
Paraparaumu, Waikanae, Raumati and Ōtaki are a forty minute drive and a completely different search market. Very little competing content, an older and wealthier demographic, and a lot of planned work. Worth its own page if you genuinely travel there, and worth skipping entirely if you do not.
The site is where a Wellington ranking turns into work.
Web design searches in Wellington carry more volume than the SEO ones and sit in the middle of the difficulty range: harder than Christchurch, nothing like Auckland. Worth competing for, but only alongside the search work, because a site nobody finds is an expensive brochure.
Need the phone ringing before SEO lands?
SEO in a market this size takes months. Google Ads takes days. For most Wellington businesses the sensible order is ads first for cash flow, with SEO built underneath so that in a year the same enquiries arrive without the click cost.
- Campaigns targeted to the city, the Hutt, Porirua or Kāpiti separately, not one blanket radius
- Negative keywords that stop your budget going on job hunters, students and DIYers
- Conversion tracking wired up properly, so you know which clicks became calls
- Monthly reporting on cost per enquiry, not impressions
Enquiries from homeowners and builders at about $6 each for nearly five years, from one tightly managed campaign run month after month. A Hawke's Bay business, not a Wellington one, and every number is theirs to verify in their own account.

No. We are a New Zealand team working with businesses nationwide, based in Hawke's Bay and Auckland. Search work does not need us to be in your city, and several of the pages competing with this one are not in Wellington either. We would rather say it plainly than let you assume.
The most competitive of the provincial and regional markets we cover, though nothing like Auckland. When we checked in September 2026 the top results were specialist search agencies rather than the templated city pages that fill the smaller markets. It is winnable on specific jobs and specific suburbs, and slower on the broad city-wide terms.
Whichever one your van is actually in most days, first. They are separate map pack markets and you will rank in the one closest to your yard far faster than the others. Once that is holding, the next suburb page is much cheaper to win than the first one was. Ads cover the areas your organic footprint has not reached yet.
Local SEO usually shows movement in 2 to 3 months and meaningful results in 6 to 12. Wellington sits at the slower end of that, because you are competing against agencies that do this for a living. Nobody can promise you a timeline and we will not.
Yes, and they are hard to separate in practice. Ranking a slow, badly structured site is expensive and slow. Most of the website work we do exists because the search work needed it. If your current site is sound we will tell you and leave it alone.
SEO is $497 +GST a month, the same as one ad campaign, and it stands on its own or alongside your website and ads. Ad spend, if you run ads, is separate and goes straight to Google. What you actually need depends on your services and your patch, which is what the free leads audit works out.
No, and nobody genuinely can, because Google does not sell rankings. In a market with this many agencies competing, be careful with anyone who promises it. What we can show you is what we are doing, what is moving and what it is costing per enquiry, every month, with no lock-in contract.
Trades and home services are our specialty, but the same system works for any Wellington local service business that lives on local search. If we do not think we are the right fit, we will tell you on the call.
